Does the President have to Be Christian? 12/16/2009
![]() We have all heard people make the comment, "It is best not to talk Religion and Politics." For the sake of discussion (and maybe controversy) I am willing to open up a can of worms. A few years ago if you were to ask me what Political Affiliation I was, I would have said that I am a die hard Republican. I am still a registered Republican, but feel myself becoming more and more of an Independent every day. You see I am tired of politics as usual, and people towing the party line. If you were to ask somebody what they stand for politically, now a days it seems like you have either Democrats or Republicans spewing opposite stances, just to take up the side of their particual party. I am tired of it, and to be honest with you, pretty worn out. A couple of weeks ago I was talking with some friends of mine. We were reading the newspaper, and Mitt Romney's name was found in one of the news reports. I made the comment that I like Mitt Romney, and one of the guys said, "Too bad he is a Mormon and not a Christian. I can't vote for anybody but a Christian." Needless to say, this sparked a conversation like dry tinder being set ablaze. We have learned that it is not wise to discuss such topics as they tend to get heated, but we do it anyway. Why is it do you think that people are so dedicated to their convictions and beliefs, without really even knowing why they hold them? So many people have convictional beliefs mainly because tradition deems so with how they were raised. Others still are easily pursuaded by others to come over to their side. The question that I would like to raise is quite simple: "Does a President have to be a Christian in order to get your vote?" I like asking this after a major election, but well prior to a future one. Hopefully emotions have settled down, and I can get your mind running. When my wife had cancer I did not interview only surgeons that were Christians in order to perform the delicate procedure. No, I wanted the best at what they did. Just because you are a Christian does not mean that you have the best business acumen . This is not to say that we shouldn't strive for a man in office that is a Follower of Christ. Please don't misunderstand what I am saying here. I am a strong Christian gentleman who would love to vote only for Christians. Romans 13:1-2 states, "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." This scripture blew my mind. To think that God is in control of all authority, whether we elected them or not. Remember Paul was writing this passage to the Christians in Rome, when Nero was in power, and he was notorious for lighting his walkways with Christians set ablaze. A little hard to swallow. I would love your comments on this Blog. Is it essential that a President be elected as a Christian? President George W. Bush professes to be a Christian. President Barak Obama also professes to be a Christian. Do we make our decision on who to vote for based primarily on their professed religious convictions, or their proven business track history? CommentsBrad Carter 12/16/2009 9:15:53 am Will we ever know if a President is truly a Christian? It's easy to say it, but another to live it. Actually if you claim to be a christian, i think you would desire to know what God's word says, and want to live by it. Too many leaders pick certain issues and run with the way of the world because they are not grounded in the scripture. Almost every President i have known since i have been alive has NO CLUE about the situations involving Isreal. They want Isreal to give up what is already theirs! Carter has made millions on books about it and claims to be a Christian. None of them have a clue, which leads me to believe they are just Christians with a label. I agree with you Greg that most are led to believe what they were taught growing up and don't kn ow the difference. But WE are accountable ourselves for what the scriptures say and how we handle the TRUTH. God is in control, so we know things are happening for a reason. We can't change what prophecy predicted some 2000-3000 years ago. It's gonna happen! God's WORD never lies! We have to accept it for what it says and we need to know what it says. We as Christians should hunger for the TRUTH and want to learn God's Word. But we would rather argue about something we don't even know about than to learn the Truth. We as Christians I think are looking for Godly leaders, but it is difficult to find leaders who are sold out to Jesus. They wouldn't get elected. But maybe that is part of God's plan. Maybe He is testing you and I to see if we will waiver on our beliefs and follow others who may try to deceive us with their own ideaology. Bottom line.... We still live in the greatest nation, but we are rolling downhill fast because we as a nation are distancing ourselves from Him. Shawn Farley 12/16/2009 10:21:26 pm Actually, Brad, I believe we are the Great Babylon described in Rev 17 and 18. Which leads to a deeper question - why is it we always believe we as a nation are always correct? What if we are the nation described in Rev 17 and 18? April Matson 12/17/2009 12:10:45 am This is an interesting topic you have brought to the discussion table. I don't think a president has to be a Christian, however Ronald Reagan made an interesting statement.....he said "is we forget that we are one country under God, then we are a country gone under". I think it is best to have a Christian president in order to help steer our nation's moral compass on topics like abortion. Obama claims to be a Christian, yet he cancelled the national day of prayer! Heaven help us, for certainly many of our leaders have gone astray. Larry Gish 12/17/2009 8:22:32 am I do believe our President should be a Christian. Although our country was founded on Christian principles the leftist radicals are hell bent on removing God from our way of life. John Shannon 12/17/2009 12:32:21 pm Maybe we should try to answer this question by asking some questions. Nic 08/31/2011 6:15:51 pm Larry, the United States Of America WAS NOT FOUND ON ANY SHAPE, FORM, OR FASHION OF CHRISTIANITY! Do your research, mate. And Obama is not a Muslim. How exactly does a Muslim walk or talk? Via your two comments here, I've come to the conclusion that you're quite ignorant. As far as Obama goes, if anything the man is an Atheist.
